Fort Clatsop, Oregon St. Louis, Missouri The Story of Sacagawea In 1804, President Thomas Jefferson sent two men, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, to explore America to the west of the Mississippi River. Lewis and Clark planned their expedition carefully. In those days, there were no roads or railways and they didn't have any maps. They left in May 1804. At first, they travelled by boat along the Missouri River. Several months later, they reached Dakota and they spent the winter there. The following spring, Lewis and Clark continued their journey.
